New walk at Porth Reservoir

This is a circular walk near Newquay of just over 5 miles with some moderately steep sections, starting and ending at the Porth Reservoir car park.

View Walk

The walk follows the Nature Trail along the edge of Porth Reservoir, passing two bird hides. The reservoir was built in the 1960s so has had half a century to naturalise and for the carp and pike within it to grow massive (anglers travel from all over the country to try their luck).

The route then climbs from the reservoir along a woodland path to reach a track which was once the main driveway through the Nanswhyden estate of the Hoblyn family. The walk passes the ruins of the once stately Nanswhyden House and Fir Hill Manor which fell into ruin when its heir never claimed it.

The route follows lanes to Colan church, which was restored by the Hoblyns, and Nanswhyden Farm via the ford at Trengoose. The route then circles the valley, with excellent views over the lake, before descending via the mill at Melancoose to complete the circular walk.

Note that this route is not suitable for dogs (as dogs are not allowed in the area around Porth Reservoir, possibly due to the risk of being eaten by the pike).

The walk is available as a guided walk app for Android and also via the app for Apple iPhones and iPads.
