I've been using Jeep socks for a few years now. I gave them a go because Trago had lots of them in at one point and were selling them really cheap. After being pleasantly surprised, I got a load more and have been using them daily for testing walks in all weathers.
Pros
- They stay up in wellies and are elasticated enough to tuck walking trousers into to keep them from trailing in the mud
- They are thick enough to provide a little bit of extra cushioning in boots
- High cotton content so breathable enough to be not too hot in summer and thick enough to be warm enough in mild Cornish winters
- They last well and are hard-wearing. Even after a few years of intensive use there are no holes. They don't go out of shape quickly like some other socks I've had.
- They are more affordable than some brands of walking socks.
Cons
- They are not explicitly cushioned so if you want something with real padding (e.g. for wellies) then you might need to go for more of a ski sock.
- Cotton is probably not as good as wool for dealing with super-sweaty feet on mega long walks. Most of our walks are 4-8 miles and they are fine for those.
- They are not designed for Arctic winters. If you spend a lot of time in freezing temperatures then something more thermal might suit you more (Jeep do a thermal version too but it's too mild in Cornwall for those).
Testing to destruction: some of the oldest pairs slowly started to go out of shape a little bit at the foot end although the ankle parts were still fine and showed no signs of falling down despite walking trousers being stuffed into them to stay out of the mud. They were perfectly good until I eventually wore through the bottoms of them, so you can't really ask for more than that.
